FAQs About Derma Rolling Treatments

New to the derma rolling world making waves in the skincare industry? If you’ve got questions about it, we’ve got the right answers to help you get started with your own derma rolling treatment.

What is derma rolling?

It is a cosmetic procedure that uses a handheld rolling or stamping device with rows of tiny needles to prick the skin open just enough to leave microscopic holes on its surface. This prompts the body's natural healing mechanism by stimulating elastin and collagen production which will result to smoother, tighter, and fuller complexion. Hence, the name micro-needling or collagen induction therapy.

Who can benefit from derma rolling?

It helps mostly with skin issues such as hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, enlarged or clogged pores, fine lines, and wrinkles, or even eye bags and stretch marks. Once the skin is superficially punctured by a derma roller, it reacts with a rush of elastic and collagen production which will encourage skin cell regeneration and the rejuvenation process for a healthy, hydrated glow.

Who should avoid using it?

Derma rolling procedures are not recommended for everybody. Don’t use it if you have any open wounds on any part of your skin or if you’re suffering from eczema, psoriasis, or any infections. It is not worth spreading germs and bacteria to other parts of your face or body. Individuals with a history of keloids or hypertrophic scarring should also avoid using it.

When to derma roll?

Nighttime is the best time to do it because of four things: 1) your face must be clean and properly exfoliated before the procedure; 2) your skin might experience redness, inflammation, or slight irritation as a side effect3) you must avoid direct sun exposure, 4) you need proper rest afterwards (no strenuous activity, no hot showers, and no makeup).

How often to derma roll?

The interval for derma rolling treatments depend on the length of needles you’ll be using, your skin’ sensitivity to the procedure, and its ability to recover completely.

The shorter the needles (0.25mm-0.5mm), the more frequent it can be done (up to 3 times a week). If needles are longer (1.0mm-1.5mm), you may need to space out treatments for as little as 10 days or as long as 4 weeks.

Needless to say, you should exercise your best judgment and make sure that your skin is fully healed before subjecting it to another round of derma rolling treatment.

What size of needle to get?

Derma roller needles have different sizes ranging from 0.25mm to 2.0mm. The size of needle you should use depends on what skin issue you’re trying to target:

0.25mm-0.75mm: Best for acne scars and hyperpigmentation as well as fine lines or enlarged pores

1.0mm-1.5mm: Best for mild acne scars, light stretch marks, skin laxity, and even surgical scarring

1.5+mm:         Best for deep scars and wrinkles as well as badly damaged skin (not recommended for at-home use; if you’re not a seasoned derma rolling user, choose an in-office procedure)

How to derma roll properly?

Roll it gently in several different directions on each section of your face: in a vertical, horizontal, and diagonal direction at least four times. No need to press hard as long as you move it in a straight line and lift. Apply just enough pressure but don’t drag across the skin. Time duration is between two to five minutes – a relatively short process that targets every part of the skin without causing serious harm to it.

What to do before derma rolling?

  1. Sanitize your derma roller with a cosmetic alcohol spray.
  2. Double cleanse your face to make sure your skin is as clean as possible.
  3. Apply a numbing cream if you have low pain tolerance or if you’re using anything above 1.0mm. Leave for 20-30 minutes or until you can already feel the desired anesthetic effect. Make sure to completely wipe off any residue before you start rolling!
Apply a hydrating and soothing serum to create a slippery surface and allow the derma roller to glide over the skin more easily.

What to do right after derma rolling?

Your skin might be red as a lobster or feel like it has slight sunburn; don’t panic because it is just temporary. That’s why you should apply any or all of the following afterwards: skin-repairing, anti-aging, collagen-inducing serums and creams as well as moisturizing sheet masks.

Try the Collagenie Anti-Aging Mask with ‘Freeze-Dried Technology’ to activate collagen production, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and leave skin brighterThis will help calm and soothe your skin as well as enhance the therapeutic effects of the derma rolling treatment.
